Match Background
Nottingham Forest v Malmö and memories of 1979. The both teams have a unique relationship, also competing in Forest's last European campaign in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the premier competition final decades past that connects these teams, with Britain's first £1m player Francis scoring the winner of a pretty miserable final to claim legendary status for the the English club.
"Forest's famous bosses, unassuming and low-key amid all the festivities and cheers, stood for a moment on a bench serenely viewing the revelry," wrote the match reporter. This represented an outstanding achievement that it is unlikely to be replicated – from Second Division to European stage in three seasons."
It's also interesting to reflect upon Malmö, who became the initial and final Swedish club to advance to the ultimate game under English manager Bob Houghton.
The current fixture is a distant from that summit, closer perhaps to the earlier European encounter between Forest and Malmö in the mid-nineties. Forest are full of confidence after thrashing Liverpool at Liverpool's home on Saturday, while Malmö haven't played officially since 9 November following the conclusion of their domestic campaign. The smart money is on the Forest tonight.
Plenty of other action on offer in this live coverage. Rangers have already been lost to a Braga this season. Rangers are at the foot of the competition table at the half-way stage of the league phase with exactly zero. They badly want a victory if they are to have any hope of making a comeback for a knockout position.
We'll keep you up to date with all nine of the 8pm kick-offs and provide the current standings from the previous games, including Villa vs Young Boys and Feyenoord v Celtic.
