Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
